Dr. Katherine Fairhurst, Ph.D, NCC, ACSM-CPT

So much of our lives are spent facing challenges that we often do not feel equipped to overcome on our own – have you ever felt the desire, deep down, to grow and achieve but feel held back by self-doubt, fear, anxiety, and insecurity? I know I have. It is my belief that, with the right support, tools, and inner dialogue, people are capable to improving how they show up in their lives. 


It is my philosophy that we can never underestimate the value of our past experiences and, in sessions, we will focus on drawing upon your strengths, life experiences, and resilience to help you navigate life’s challenges and tap into your potential. 

My approach to the therapeutic process prioritizes the client-therapist relationship – we are a team – and draws up two distinct areas of mental wellness: (1) sport psychology principles of elite performance to help you develop a vision, set goals, actualize potential, and live with intention, and (2) a holistic approach by integrating somatic and physiological approaches such as nutrition, physical activity, and exercise in partnership with counseling therapy.


With over 15 years of elite sport experience and 5 years as a Certified Personal Trainer, I recently completed advanced training specializing in:

 

  • Ph.D. in Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology specializing in:

    • Mental performance for athletes and other high performers

    • Team dynamics in sport and business

    • Weight management in exercise settings

    • Exercise is Medicine

  • Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling as a Resident for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Virginia with emphasis on:

    • Cognitive Behavior Therapy

    • Motivational Interviewing and Solution-Focused Brief Counseling

    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

  • Certified Personal Trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine with experience in:

    • Weight management

    • Clinical weight loss

    • Youth sports training

    • Injury rehabilitation

    • Physical approaches to stress management
